PERSPECTIVES

Stepping Back to Fly Forward: Our Annual Offsite Recap

This month, the Earlybird team reunited in Mallorca to reflect, exchange perspectives, and convene beyond the day-to-day. In a world shaped by speed, AI, and constant connectivity, these moments matter intensely. This is a look at what happens when we arrive at a place and create space to think, build trust, and realign on what it means to back the most ambitious founders.

There’s a certain clarity that only comes from stepping away. In April, the Earlybird team gathered in Mallorca for something very intentional: a few days to zoom out, reflect, and recharge with the people and ideas that drive what we do daily.

When speed, constant connectivity, and output are increasingly rewarded, taking time to pause is not always obvious. But it is often where the most important shifts begin.

Venture is, at its core, a long-term game. It requires conviction, pattern recognition, and the ability to see around corners. But it also requires something less discussed - perspective. Away from our usual environments, conversations deepened, ideas were challenged, and assumptions were revisited.

And sometimes, perspective is as simple as breathing different air. It slows you down, clears your head, and allows you to refocus.

The Power of Being Together, in Real Life

As AI reshapes how we work, communicate, and build, the value of being physically present stands out. We spend much of our time on screens, efficiently exchanging information, making decisions, and moving quickly. But trust, alignment, and shared ambition are assembled differently. They evolve in smaller moments between meetings, in unscheduled conversations, and through shared experiences.

This meant taking a yoga class, playing a game of tennis, doing a challenge course, or sharing a long meal outdoors in a beautiful setting. This is where conversations stretched well beyond work, and where, at some point, some of us were watching a live Arsenal match mid-meal. Meeting up in Mallorca reinforced something simple but powerful: great partnerships are foundationally human.

It allowed teammates from different VC functions (like finance, operations, investment, HR, and more) to discuss ideas related to their work or personal lives. This deepens the trust we need to move forward as one Earlybird team.

Reflecting, Sharing, Growing

This offsite was also designed around a balance of reflection and exchange. Whether it’s the pace of innovation in AI, the continued depth of European talent, or evolving founder needs, the offsite created room to connect dots across topics we love to explore.

And most importantly, it was a moment of discovery for all of us. New colleagues, who might’ve taken longer to get to know in such depth, were immediately part of the fabric. We shared stories, backgrounds, and hobbies across Berlin, London, and Munich offices and beyond.

There’s a reason people say ‘Malle ist nur einmal im Jahr.’ (Mallorca only happens once a year.) And maybe that’s exactly the point. It’s a special occasion to be celebrated. We’re grateful to have had it.

Building with Intention

Ultimately, these few days in Mallorca were a reminder of why we do what we do.

We’re in the business of backing builders: people who are creating something from nothing, often against the odds. To do that well, we need to operate with clarity, alignment, and trust as a team. That requires intention in how we collaborate, how we challenge each other, and how we show up for founders.

Taking the time to step back is not a pause from building. It’s part of building.

And none of that happens by chance. A special thank you to Vivian and Christian from the Berlin office for the thoughtful planning and seamless execution that made these days what they were.

And if you’re excited about building with us, or want to be part of the team behind the builders, take a look at our open roles!
